Cornwall Simmental Club Report 2008
Dinner at Godolphin Arms, Marazion. Great evening as usual.
FEBRUARY
Quiz night with the South Devon Club. Brains stirred into action.
Good evening held at County Arms, Truro.
MARCH
Fiona Sloan (Breed Development Officer) gave talk at Callestick Farm
to club and Commercial farmers. Horrendous weather – storms. Good
turnout, interesting talk.
MAY
Herd Health Day at Bosahan Farm by invitation of the Olds family.
Vets dropped out of talk at last minute so Jim Buckland spoke on why
we should take herd health seriously. Then toured around farm and
cattle.
Open evening at Rose Farm (Chyanhal Simmental) to celebrate 20 years
of Simmental and the pet crematorium.
JUNE
Royal Cornwall. Excellent turnout. New competitors, the Old’s
family and Thomas family. Judge Gerald Smith impressed by cattle.
Boddington very successful. Stand looked after by William Bolitho
at last minute. Well supported, everyone enjoyed the show.
JULY
Herd visit at ‘Trenodden’, Liskeard at the Pearces’ farm. Superb
evening, lovely weather, great cattle, super food.
AUGUST
Herd visit to ‘Sowenna’, Bodmin, the Hawkey’s farm. Good turnout to
visit commercial cattle and Simmentals. Great hospitality. Cattle looked
well.
SEPTEMBER
Annual club trip, this year to Northern Ireland. Visited Ormorga,
Ballinaire, Ranfurly and Kilbride Herds. Had an amazing time. Great
Hospitality everywhere. Wonderful cattle. Beautifully arranged by
David Hazelton for us. We were joined by members of other clubs. Good
fun had by all. Inspirational.
Herd competition (Cornwall Club) Judged by Robert Jordan, organized
by Roger Pascoe. Excellent entry. Well done to all prize winners and
all who took part.
On a sad note, Keith Olver lost his fight against cancer in June
and our sympathies go out to Jaqui and his family. He was a popular
member and bred some good cattle over the years. He will be missed.
In conclusion, next year 2009 is the big one at the Royal Cornwall,
being the National Simmental Show. Looking forward to a great show
of Cornish cattle but we need lots of sponsorship. Please all try
and get some!!
Thank you to everyone who hosted an event this year and all who
helped make this a happy and successful club.
We would all like to thank John Langdon, our past president who
retired this year. He was in at the beginning of the club and has
been a supportive and valued member for many years.
It was a popular decision to appoint James Lawrey (Tolver) as our
new president.
Wishing all a prosperous and successful New Year.
