About the Cornwall Simmental Club

Cornwall Simmental Club was founded in 1990 with the help and encouragement of David Gaunt who was then general secretary of the Simmental Society. Our first president (and original chairman) was John Langdon a well respected, now retired, breeder of Simmentals with his 'Carnon ' herd.

In 2008 we were delighted that James Lawrey, ’Tolver’ herd, accepted our invitation to replace John at the helm. Despite his fragile health James has taken an active interest in the club and was very proud of the way we hosted the National Simmental Show at Royal Cornwall in 2009.

At the 2009 A.G.M. we reluctantly accepted James’s decision to step down and welcomed Roger Pascoe to the post of President. Roger has enthusiastically organised the club’s annual herd competition, started in 2006, and accompanied the various judges involved the length and breadth of Cornwall.

In 2010 we purchased our own hospitality tent for the Royal Cornwall Show and local herd visits. It is also available to members for private functions.

We are proud of the facility we provide at our county show to promote our breed every year and providing a place for members and friends to gather and share tea, cakes and a good chat while resting weary feet or sheltering from sunshine or rain

Members of our club have enjoyed great success in the show and sale rings and new participants are given every encouragement and support from more seasoned campaigners.

We have built up a reputation for being a friendly club and aim to provide plenty of enjoyable social activities during the year ranging from a quiz night to informative talks. January features our annual dinner and we usually have at least one 'day trip' to visit herds and places of interest, a summer B.B.Q combining a farm visit with a sociable evening, and an Autumn 2 or 3 day trip away to visit other Simmental herds.

Our club is well worth joining to meet and chat with other people who share a passion for Simmentals.  Having our own website enables members to share some highlights and advertise their stock to a wider audience. For example during 2010 our website has averaged in excess of 25,000 hits per month.

JAMES LAWREY

James Lawrey, Tolver man

A true Cornish and colourful gent

A happy soul with so many friends

That he’d chat to wherever he went

With a cup of tea and a rolled up fag

Perhaps some of his heavy cake too

Discussing the merits of this and that

Discovering ‘wasson’ and ‘wass new’

He loved his cattle, his dog, his plants

He loved to sing and dance

He looked pretty dapper in his dinner suit

That he’d wear whenever he’d chance

A kind and helpful loveable chap

Wise and knowledgeable too

He enjoyed his life looking over Mounts Bay

On his farm with that wonderful view

Surrounded by hens and cattle and sheep

In his element James would be

He’d a passion for Simmentals and a pride in his own

Which he’d invite any visitors to see

Now he has left on his travels beyond the blue sky

All our love and good wishes we send

He might chat up an Angel or two on the way

Bon Voyage, sweet dreams, dearest friend
