Club Visit to Cathedral Herd

On Sunday 28th August 2011 fifteen club members spent a very enjoyable afternoon with James, Centa and Sam Berry viewing the Reserve Best Large Herd in the 2010 South West Simmental Club and 3rd Best Large Herd Cornwall Club competitions.

We saw two cow groups, one with seven bull calves and the other with ten heifers at foot all born between January and April 2011. They were a well grown even bunch. Five 2010 heifers looked tremendous and included Cathedral Bonnie and Cathedral Bluebell shown with success at Stithians and Camborne this season. Two in-calf heifers Cathedral Adelaide and Cathedral Annabel completed the picture.

The sun even came out as we took the opportunity to visit the famous Gwennap Pit as James and Centa have land very close by.

James and Centa purchased their foundation animals from various dispersal sales including Crackley Veto in 1988 and their first female St Lawrence Annie with a heifer calf at foot. After meeting Cornwall Club members, cows from Ralph McDuff ‘Hazelcourt Laura’, Penny Lally ‘Chyanhal Edwina Belle’, one of Philip Johnson’s ‘Leseave Cliff Bella’ and Heywood Hannadante with calf at foot and in-calf again followed.

The bulls used on the herd have all boasted proven bloodlines 1998 - 2001 Ashleigh Eros (Sterling Winston) and 2009 - 2011 Twyford Remus (Blackford Lonestar) were purchased from Peter Gregory after being impressed by the stock they were leaving at Abbey Chase. In between 2002 – 2005 Wroxall Martin (Milnafua Grenade) and 2005 – 2009 Wishful Robson (Salisbury Challenger) did a great job.

The herd moves on with the arrival of Bolankin Brendon 10 a son of Hockenhull Marvel with maternal bloodlines from Milnafua Graduate and Pennance Hannadante. annadant

Thank you James and Centa for your generous hospitality and wonderful home made pasties.
