The First Perth Bull Sales at Stirling Back to Cornwall Simmental
reports page Tuesday 20th October 2009 saw the first Simmental Bulls and Females sold at the new Stirling Agricultural Centre. Regular visitors to the October and February sales formerly held at Perth voiced mixed feelings about the venue but most importantly buyers were there. The high level of interest in the Simmental breed was apparent as both the showing and sales rings were packed with observers. A total of 109 animals were led up for sale from the original catalogue listing of nearly 150. Of these only 17 were not sold with the auctioneers achieving a very satisfactory clearance rate of 85%. The 85 bulls averaged £4981.00 with Hockenhull Waterloo, placed 4th earlier in the day, topping the sale at £16000 going to the MacPhersons (Blackford). Waterloo by the reknown Blackford Harvester out of Hockenhull Girlie13th by Dovefields Gallant has a terminal index of +27 and a self replacing index of +31. It was wonderful to witness the breeders who supported the 2009 National Simmental Show at our Royal Cornwall do so well. Aled Davies (Hirwaun) lifted the Senior Male Championship with ‘Washy’ (Reserve Junior Elite Champion Royal Cornwall) and went to stand Reserve Supreme Male before being sold for £7000. The Gwynnes (Chestermann) achieved the same price with ‘Winston’ (Reserve Male Champion Royal Cornwall) after winning his class and returned to Wales with Kilbride Farm Wick after parting with £10 000. Gethin & Emrys Lloyd (Crugmelyn) sold ‘Wellies’ ( 3rd Royal Cornwall) for £3200 and reinvested the proceeeds by securing the Intermediate and Supreme Champion Woodhall Warren for £6500. Cornish breeders and club members Steve and Gill Gummow attended the sale seeking a replacement for their stock bull ‘Corskie Reward’ by Popes Laird. Requiring fresh bloodlines and an animal with better EBV’s then the existing incumbent reduced their shopping list to a mere six. They were delighted to acquire Lakeside Warrior after some lively bidding. A March 2008 son of Kilbride Farm Newry,
Warrior came second in the intermediate bull class to the eventual
supreme champion. Boasting the impressive scores of +31 for terminal
sire index and a self replacing index of +38 Warrior was Male
Champion and Reserve overall to David Hazelton’s outstanding heifer
Ranfurly Weikel 3rd at Enniskillen Show. Back to Cornwall Simmental reports page |
